They have branches around the globe and often offer franchise opportunities. All of these well-known brands coordinate international rentals through online services that allow renters to comparison shop before booking a rental.

Hertz

Hertz is the largest global car rental agency with nearly 10,000 branches in over 145 countries around the world. It is also the oldest, having been established in the United States in 1918. One of the most interesting aspects of Hertz is its ?Fun Collection? which allows people to rent racing and high-end sports cars. These cars are available at select airport-based Hertz rental agencies. Hertz also has a ?Green Collection? for environmentally-conscious renters. These include hybrids and electric vehicles.

Avis Rent A Car

As the second largest car rental agency in the world, it has a major presence in North America, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. Avis is often associated with airports because they are a major provider of cheap car rental for travelers, both business and leisure, who pick up their cars at the airport. In addition, the company opened the very first airport-based car rental agency.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Enterprise is part of the largest car rental network that currently exists in the world. The network includes Alamo Rent A Car, National Car Rental, and Europacar. Enterprise was established in 1957. With nearly 7,000 locations in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Germany, it has a strong international presence.

Alamo Rent A Car

Alamo is now owned by the Enterprise Holdings, the parent company of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, but it still operates as an independent car rental business. It was established in 1974 and was the first car rental company to offer unlimited free mileage to its customers who were primarily leisure travelers. It currently has more than 1,000 branches in North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Australia, Africa, and throughout the Asian-Pacific area. Travelers can take advantage of nearly 160 self-serve kiosks across the United States. Approximately 15 million drivers use their services annually.

National Car Rental

Along with Alamo, National Rental is a member of the Enterprise family. It was established in 1954 and now has over 3,000 branches in North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asian-Pacific, Europe, Australia, and Africa. They were the first car rental company to offer one-way car rentals, flat rates, and a frequent-renter program to customers. Customers can get cheap car rental rates from these large rental agencies. In addition to daily specials and regular discounts, customers benefit from larger agencies because they typically offer lower base rates.

Continue reading »]]> MADRID (Reuters) – Spain‘s small and medium-sized exporters are struggling to compete with European rivals due to high borrowing costs, as fallout from the country’s banking crisis hurts one of the few bright spots in a contracting economy.

From ceramic tile makers to chemicals producers and conveyor belt manufacturers, they say credit is too expensive or simply unavailable, even though exporters appear at first sight to be healthy.

Since the crisis year of 2008, Spanish exports have grown faster than those of any other euro zone country except Estonia, according to banking group BBVA. However, that growth is now slowing sharply, partly as some foreign markets have joined Spain in slipping back into recession.

On top of this, small and medium-sized exporters say they have become indirect victims of a property market crash which has made the banks highly cautious lenders.

“Nobody trusts anybody and you can’t even get a 30,000 euro credit line approved,” said Monica Garcia del Pino, director of ceramic tile maker Ceramica de San Gines in the central Spanish province of Toledo.

Even when firms persuade the banks to extend credit, the cost is high. Spanish firms pay 5.62 percent for a three-year loan of less than 250,000 euros ($318,500), according to Eurostat data.

This is modestly higher than the euro zone average of 5.25 percent. But competitors in Spain’s heavyweight industrial rivals enjoy significantly lower financing costs, with German firms paying 4.4 percent and those in France just 3.23 percent.

The blame falls on Spain’s damaged banks, which are cutting down on lending in an attempt to repair their balance sheets brought low by bad property loans made during the boom years before the bubble burst in 2008.

Lending curbs have tightened the screw across an economy now in its second recession in almost three years.

Large corporations, which account for the lion’s share of Spanish exports, can turn to the bond market to raise funds, but viable mid-sized firms with a chain of orders cannot get affordable credit.

No one knows the exact effect of the credit scarcity but the Economy Ministry expects export growth to fall to 3.5 percent in 2012. That would be less than a third of last year’s rate when exports were the only driver of economic growth. This year gross domestic product is expected to shrink 1.7 percent.

SCALED-BACK AMBITIONS

Companies like Ceramica de San Gines, which employs four people and averages only 100,000 euros in sales a year, are having to scale back their ambitions.

Garcia del Pino said her firm is charging in advance for all exports, which account for 40 percent of sales, to avoid costly bank borrowing. “As a consequence the company has had to focus clearly on smaller projects that require less funding in order to be able to maintain at least the revenue volume of 100,000 euros,” she said.

Even when her company won a contract to build the world’s largest ceramic tile mural in Algeria in 2009, it could not get a loan and depended on financing from OHL, a large Spanish infrastructure firm that had contracted it for the job.

Most of Spain’s 2.7 million companies are small and mid-sized and they employ 78 percent of the workforce, higher than the European Union average.

But the kind of lending they need is drying up. New business credit lines of less than 1 million euros were down 23 percent in February from a year earlier, according to central bank data.

For all their problems, Spanish banks are not short of funding themselves thanks to a European Central Bank decision to tackle the euro zone’s credit crisis by lending one trillion euros at low interest rates.

But rather than lending this money on into the economy, Spanish banks have reinvested it in higher-paying sovereign debt.

“The lack of financing is terrible because it’s strangling exports,” Trade Secretary Jaime Garcia-Legaz told Reuters.

“It’s not the big operations, it’s the day-to-day operations that need working capital to finance production and exports. If you sell on 90-day (credit) terms you need working capital,” said Garcia-Legaz, an official just below ministerial rank.

BANKING DIFFICULTIES

Spanish banks are undergoing a wave of mergers in an attempt to build up their strength. The number of lenders is expected to shrink to 10 from around 40 before the crisis as the government forces them through various rounds of cleaning up of toxic real estate assets.

“Spanish banks are very reluctant to renew credit lines. We used to work with credit lines of around 300,000 euros before the crisis and now the amount of the credit lines granted has gone down substantially to 150,000 euros,” said Federico Segura, manager at Esbelt, a Barcelona-based company that makes thermoplastic conveyor belts.

Esbelt has slashed spending on expansion following a jump in funding costs and delays in payments. “We are paying more attention now to managing the company’s treasury and clearly dedicate less time to our business operations,” Segura added.

The company, which exports 70 percent of its products to more than 85 countries, has an annual turnover of around 21 million euros and employs around 180 workers.

The credit crisis is rooted in the woes of Spain‘s sovereign risk. Spanish government benchmark bond yields have risen to around 6 percent due to worries about Madrid’s ability to meet EU targets for cutting its budget deficit while the economy shrinks and almost one in every four Spanish workers has no job.

This in turn has pushed up private borrowing costs. “The loss of competitiveness is very high,” said Trade Secretary Garcia-Legaz.

A research report by BBVA noted that financing represented a higher burden on the balance sheets of the Spanish small and mid-sized companies than for bigger firms, meaning they have less room for negotiating better terms with banks.

Sniace, a chemicals company in the northern region of Cantabria which employs more than 500, believes that manufacturing in Spain is a drawback.

“We operate in a global market where our sales are mainly affected by fluctuations in the price of the commodities we operate in,” said Blas Mezquita, the chairman of Sniace which sells cellulose for textiles and paper goods to clients in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

“When it comes to funding our main handicap is still that we are based in Spain.” ($1 = 0.7849 euros)

In a relatively strange fashion, AT&T’s quietly pulled the plug on its U-verse kit for the Xbox 360 — at least for the time being. According to a note on its own site, the company’s taking some time to focus on “improving and enhancing” its U-verse bundle. This is probably a reference to the updated app (that would also require XBL Gold) AT&T promised for the new dashboard with Kinect support and a new UI, but has yet to deliver. As Multichannel points out, earlier last week Netflix had filed a complaint with the FCC, claiming that AT&T’s U-verse on Xbox violated network neutrality regulations — though, it’s unclear whether this had anything to do with the outfit’s decision to suspend the service. AT&T has said the set-top kit won’t “be available until the new enhancements and functionality are added,” so we’d recommend not holding your breath for too long.

When you decide to do a home improvement project, it is important to do ones that promote safety at your residence. Anyone that has ever had a fire in their home more than likely had it start due to an electrical malfunction.

Electrical difficulties can lead to fires in your house; if you have one in your wall, you can feel it with your hands. You may have trouble breathing due to the smoke that the fire will cause. Too much current in the wires is bound to make them hot to the touch. Home improvement projects, specifically those that deal with electrical safety, is the emphasis of this article.

If you are about to remodel your basement, seriously consider raising the house service electrical receptacles. Once your outlets are high off the ground, they will be safe from the water when flooding does occur.

Of course you can probably get an idea by your location, and obviously a dry or desert type of locale normally will not have flooded basements. You may want to place them a foot off the ground, but not 6 feet or anything that looks absolutely ludicrous. It might be in your best interest to pay an electrician to do the job for you so you know that it is done right the first time.

Installation of the circuits should include GFCI outlets. These are also called ground fault circuit interrupters. The appearance of GFCI outlets is very noticeable, something that will be clear when compared with other sockets.

The purpose of this particular outlet is to measure the current between the neutral and hot terminals which is the path the electricity takes. Any type of a short would be detected by this device in the receptacle due to a differentiation in the current itself. Once the current flow has changed, the GFCI will open up and the current flow will cease.

Having new appliances in your kitchen is a great thing to have, especially if you have the money! Use a licensed electrician to put them in. It is our recommendation to avoid anyone who does not have an electrical license. The appliances that you are installing will require a current loading protection that can handle the new appliances, especially if the house is old. Your wiring my need to be changed out. You may even have to change your outlets to get them up to par. Any electrical job should be done with safety in mind. That is why an electrician should do the job. The bottom line is you never want to take chances, especially when it comes to your house and electricity.

Home improvement ideas run from good to bad, and everywhere in between. You need to learn on your own what things you want improved for your home. Even if you are not the handiest with tools, you can learn a lot and do things that are not that intensive. In-depth knowledge in all areas of home repair are not needed. Some jobs need to be done by those who are professionals, because then the job will get done right, and more safely.

We’re starting to think the Russians have an inside track on high-resolution space photos. When Nokia’s 41-megapixel photo of Earth’s horizon was just a twinkle in the 808 PureView designers’ eyes, the Russian Federal Space Agency had long since finished taking 121-megapixel photos of the whole planet that we’re just now seeing in earnest. Unlike NASA photos, which are usually composites of multiple shots, the Elektro-L weather satellite’s images display the entire planet in one ridiculously detailed take from 22,369 miles away. Why the trippy colors? Instead of just displaying Earth as-is — real colors are so passé, dahling — the satellite layers on near-infrared imagery that paints vegetation in wide swaths of rust-like orange.

You can get a peep of what a day-night cycle looks like for Elektro-L in the video below, and hop over to the sources to get an inkling of just how insanely detailed the images can be. You can also be slightly jealous of the satellite’s network connection: at a minimum 2.6Mbps and maximum 16.4Mbps for bandwidth, odds are that it has faster broadband than you do.

As a refresh, I reviewed the cans last week and found that it really came down to like vs. love. They’re fine, but I can’t necessarily justify a $60-$70 purchase. John felt the same way when we sat down to chat about the Hesh headphones in this latest episode of Fly or Die. But it extends far beyond that. As John would say, “friends don’t let friends buy bad headphones.”
